Laines Schmalwasser
PhD candidate in the Computer Vision Group, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Friedrich Schiller University Jena

Laines is a research scientist at the German Aerospace Center – Institute of Data Science and a PhD candidate in the Computer Vision Group, supervised by Prof. Dr. Joachim Denzler and Dr. Julia Niebling. His research focuses on explaining what vision models have learned in terms of concepts. He is currently working on concept activation vectors and concept bottleneck models. A central question of his research is whether concept-based explanations can be trusted. As part of the LOKI project, he is also developing methods to explain the reasoning behind AI-driven assistants to human aircraft operators. He also enjoys supervising Master’s and Bachelor’s students at Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
