Jan Blunk
PhD candidate in the Marine Mineral Resources (MMR) group at the GEOMAR Helmholtz-Centre for Ocean Research Kiel

Jan’s research focuses on incorporating domain knowledge into machine learning models to improve their reliability and generalization. He is particularly interested in methods that combine data-driven learning with established knowledge from the application domain rather than relying solely on observational data. His current work applies these ideas to marine geochemistry and chemical oceanography, where he investigates how machine learning can support thermodynamic modelling in Earth and environmental systems with limited experimental data.
Jan received his M.Sc. in Computer Science from Friedrich Schiller University Jena in 2023 and began his research career in the Computer Vision Group under the supervision of Prof. Joachim Denzler, where he focused on bias in machine learning and the incorporation of domain knowledge into data-driven models. In
2026, he joined the Marine Mineral Resources group at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, where he now applies these ideas to machine-learning approaches for marine data science and chemical oceanography under the supervision of Prof. Sylvia Sander, Prof. Kevin Köser, and Dr. Laura Haffert.
