Tim Büchner
PhD candidate in the Computer Vision Group, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Friedrich Schiller University Jena
Tim is a PhD candidate at the Computer Vision Group Jena at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, supervised by Prof. Dr. Joachim Denzler. His research focuses on bringing physical and medical structure into data-driven AI models, with a particular emphasis on multimodal facial analysis and physics-informed machine learning. A central part of his work investigates the human face as a multimodal object. By combining high-resolution 3D facial geometry, surface electromyography (sEMG), and video, Tim studies how muscle activity translates into visible facial expressions. This research has a strong clinical application in the study of facial palsy. Within the DFG-funded project Bridging the Gap: Mimics and Muscles, he works together with the Ear-Nose-Throat Clinic Jena to better understand facial function and support improved clinical assessment.
