ELLIS UnConference Workshop - AI for Earth and Climate Sciences
Paris (France), December 8, 2026
This ELLIS UnConference workshop organized by the ELLIS Program Machine Learning for Earth and Climate Sciences and the ELLIS Unit Jena is co-located with NeurIPS Paris and will take place on December 8, 2026.
The 2 hours „AI for Earth and Climate Sciences“ workshop brings together researchers from computer science, Earth system science, and related fields to explore the potential of AI-driven methodologies for addressing pressing environmental challenges. Participants will discuss current approaches and future directions for applying machine learning, data-driven modeling, hybrid modeling, and explainable AI to climate prediction, environmental monitoring, ecosystem modeling, and the analysis of large-scale Earth observation data. Attention will be given to the integration of physical knowledge with AI techniques, the challenges of data acquisition, quality and interpretability, and the need for trustworthy and transparent models in critical decision-making contexts.
The session is timely, given the rapidly growing intersection of machine learning and Earth system science, and the increasing societal urgency of climate-related decision-making. The intended audience includes ML researchers interested in environmental applications, Earth and climate scientists exploring AI methods, and students working at this interface. Participants can expect to take away a clearer picture of state-of-the-art methods and open challenges in AI for Earth and climate sciences, as well as connections to other researchers working in this space.
